Sam Hamilton was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1952. He immigrated to Canada in 1973 and makes his home in Saskatchewan. Sam is a self-taught artist who has had a life long love of drawing. The purpose of Sam's work is to draw people's attention to the beauty found in everyday images that we all see but don't really look at in any great detail. Sam is very interested in the effects of light and shade on his subjects. His work invites the viewer to study the complex shapes, distortions and colors caused by light and shadow on the subjects which range from fruit in plastic bags to flowers in crystal vases and all manner of still life subject. Sam works in colored pencil, a medium which he feels gives an unsurpassed depth of richness and color. It is also a medium which works perfectly with his incredible detail.
