Mark Totan is an Inuk artist originally from the small Eastern Arctic community of Igloolik, Nunavut. Mark is a self taught artist who has been carving in a variety of stone and antler mediums for some 13 years. Each carving is an original and depicts some feature of the lifestyle or history of his people. Mark begins the carving process by roughing out a block of stone with hammer, chisel, and hand ax. Then he uses files, rasps, and sandpaper for finishing. The final touch consists of heating and rubbing the carving with a wax or oil to accent the natural grain of the stone. Mark displays and sells his carvings in various galleries throughout Canada and in the American Mid West. In addition, his works form a part of numerous private and corporate collections throughout the world.
