About Helmut Langeder
Born in Steyr, Austria in 1943. I came to Canada with my family in 1954 at the age of thirteen. I started painting in oils at the age of fourteen. I studied at Thomas Darcy McGee High School and then went to McGill University in the field of Architecture. I abandoned university after one year and took a course at Studio 5316 in Commercial Art. My first job was with Penthouse Studio, then Criterion Art. I worked as a designer and illustrator reaching the top in my field. This is where I really perfected my skills of drawing and the use of new mediums such as acrylic. For the last twenty seven years of my career as a commercial artist I was co-owner, illustrator and creative director of Catalpa Design Inc.
During all this time I never stopped painting, mostly landscapes or quaint villages and city scenes. When time and conditions allow, I sketch or paint on location to capture the mood and give my interpretation of the scene.
